Shopify app development for the way your store works

Rolling Pandas is a Shopify agency and Shopify Select Partner that builds Shopify apps and integrations for ecommerce brands: custom apps for one store, theme app and checkout extensions, Shopify Functions, connections to your ERP, warehouse, shipping, subscriptions and Klaviyo, and admin tools that automate repeat work. App projects are fixed price after a free call. The custom app we built for Dan123yal Toys+ syncs over 20,000 SKUs every day.

Custom Shopify app development: what we build

Our Shopify app development services cover six kinds of work: custom apps for one store, theme app extensions, checkout extensions, Shopify Functions, integrations with the systems behind your store, and admin tools and automations for your team.

  • Custom apps for one store

An app built for your store only, around your rules and your data. It is installed with a link from Shopify's Dev Dashboard, needs no App Store review and runs on Shopify's GraphQL Admin API.

  • Theme app extensions

Features your team adds in the theme editor as app blocks and app embeds, without anyone editing theme code. App blocks need an Online Store 2.0 theme, and they are removed entirely if the app is uninstalled.

  • Checkout extensions

Fields, offers and messages inside Shopify's own checkout and on the Thank you and Order status pages. Those two pages work from the Basic plan up. The information, shipping and payment steps need Shopify Plus.

  • Shopify Functions

Your own discount, delivery, payment and cart rules, run inside Shopify's checkout: bundles, tiered discounts, hidden delivery options or order limits. Custom apps with Functions need Shopify Plus.

  • Integrations

Orders, stock, prices and customers kept in sync between Shopify and your ERP, warehouse or 3PL, shipping tools, subscriptions and Klaviyo, so nobody copies data by hand.

  • Admin tools and automations

Screens inside your Shopify admin for the work your team repeats: bulk edits, imports, exports, reports and scheduled jobs. On Shopify Plus, the app can also add its own tasks to Shopify Flow.

Public app or custom app?

Start with the Shopify App Store. If an existing app does the job, it is almost always cheaper than building, hosting and updating your own. A custom app pays off when no app does what you need, or when your data has to move between Shopify and your own systems.

  • Usually the cheaper choice

An app from the App Store

    • The need is a common one: reviews, subscriptions, email, loyalty or search
    • An existing app does what you need, or close enough
    • Its monthly fee costs less than building and looking after your own

We set these up too. Qstar's custom theme runs Loop subscriptions and Reviews.io.

  • Built for your store only

    A custom app

    • No app does what you need, or three apps each do part of it
    • Data has to move between Shopify and your ERP, warehouse or other systems
    • Your discount, delivery or payment rules are your own
    • Your team repeats the same admin work every day

Dan123yal Toys+ needed one: an app that syncs over 20,000 SKUs every day.

    See the case study
  • A product for many stores

    A public app

    • You want to sell the app to other Shopify stores
    • Shopify reviews it before it can be listed in the App Store
    • Custom apps can't charge through Shopify's app billing, so selling one needs a public app
    • It needs support and updates for every store that installs it

One rule to know first: Shopify doesn't let an app switch between public and custom after it is set up, so we settle this before we build.

How Shopify app development works with us

Every app follows five steps: a call and a scope, a map of the data and screens, the build on a development store, the launch on your store, then updates as Shopify changes.

  1. Step 1: Call and scope

A free 30‑minute call about the job the app has to do. We check the App Store first, then send a written scope with a fixed price.

  2. Step 2: Map the data and screens

We map what the app reads and writes, which systems it talks to and what your team sees. Admin screens and storefront blocks are designed in Figma for your approval.

  3. Step 3: Build and test

We build on a Shopify development store with test data, then test against real cases from your store before the app touches live orders.

  4. Step 4: Launch

We install the app on your store and watch its first runs with you: syncs, orders and anything your team flags.

  5. Step 5: Keep it current

Shopify releases a new API version every three months and supports each for at least 12 months. The Rolling Team keeps your app up to date and adds what you need next.

Apps and tools we've built

Two of our case studies show the work: a custom Shopify app that syncs over 20,000 SKUs every day for a toy retailer, and three web‑based tools built into a fulfillment company's website.

    • SKU syncs that run automatically, every day

Shopify app development questions

What is Shopify app development?

Shopify app development is building software that adds features to a Shopify store through Shopify's APIs and extensions: custom apps for one store, public apps for the App Store, theme app extensions, checkout extensions and Shopify Functions. It starts where Shopify's settings and the App Store stop.

What is the difference between a public app and a custom app?

A public app is built for many stores, goes through Shopify's app review and can be listed in the Shopify App Store. A custom app is built for one store, or for the stores in one Shopify Plus organization, and needs no review. Custom apps can't charge through Shopify's app billing, and an app can't switch from one type to the other later.

How much does Shopify app development cost?

It depends on what the app does and which systems it connects. At Rolling Pandas, an app project is a fixed price, set after a free call once we know the scope. Ongoing work runs on The Rolling Team from $3,500 a month. If an App Store app already does the job for a monthly fee, we tell you, because it usually costs less.

How is a Shopify app developed?

We agree the job and a fixed price, map the data and screens, then build the app on a Shopify development store with Shopify's GraphQL Admin API, webhooks and, where they fit, theme app extensions, checkout extensions and Shopify Functions. We test it against real cases, install it on your store and keep it updated as Shopify releases a new API version every three months.

How do I allow custom app development in Shopify?

Since January 1, 2026, there is nothing to switch on. New custom apps are built in Shopify's Dev Dashboard, which you reach from Settings, then Apps, then Develop apps. Store owners have full access, and staff need the App development permission. If an agency builds the app, it sends you an install link instead. Custom apps made in the admin before 2026 keep working under Legacy custom apps.

What happened to Shopify private apps?

Shopify replaced private apps with custom apps. Private apps were deprecated in January 2022, and on January 20, 2023 every remaining one was converted to a custom app automatically. Since January 1, 2026, new custom apps are built in the Dev Dashboard instead of the Shopify admin.

Do I need Shopify Plus for a custom app?

Not for most app work. Plus is needed for custom apps that use Shopify Functions, and for checkout extensions in the information, shipping and payment steps. Extensions on the Thank you and Order status pages work from the Basic plan up. Plus also raises the GraphQL Admin API limit from 100 to 1,000 points a second, which helps large syncs.

How do I choose a Shopify app development company?

Ask to see apps they have built and talk to the people who will build yours. Ask whether they will tell you when an App Store app is enough, how they keep up with Shopify's API versions, and what happens after launch. Then check their profiles: ours is in Shopify's Partner Directory, as a Select Partner since August 2023.
