What goes into the number

Everything is worked out in your browser from what you type. Nothing is stored.

Card fee
The plan's rate times the price, plus the fixed fee. On Basic, a $60 order costs 2.9% plus 30 cents, which is $2.04.
Provider fee
With another payment provider, Shopify adds its own fee on top of the provider's: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus.
Profit per order
The price minus product, shipping, ads, other costs and the card fee.
Margin and markup
Margin is profit divided by the price. Markup is what you add to the product cost, divided by that cost. They are not the same number.

Profit margin questions, answered

How do I calculate profit margin on Shopify?

Take the selling price, subtract the product cost, shipping, ad cost, other costs and the card fee, then divide what is left by the selling price.

What is the difference between margin and markup?

Margin is a share of the selling price. Markup is a share of the product cost. A product that costs $20 and sells for $50 has a 150% markup and a 60% gross margin.

Does this include the Shopify plan price?

No. The monthly plan price is a fixed cost, not a cost of one order. The tool does show how many orders pay for a plan, using Shopify's monthly prices on yearly billing, and from $2,300 for Plus.

Are these Shopify's rates in my country?

They are the US online rates for standard cards, read on 4 November 2026. Premium and international cards cost more, and rates differ by country. If yours differ, choose My own rate and type it.

Does it count returns?

Not on its own. If you know what returns cost you on an average order, add that amount to Other costs per order.
