What Shopify theme is this store using?

Enter a store address. We read its public homepage and show the theme, the version and the apps that load there.

We read the public homepage once. We store nothing and ask for no sign-up.

Find a Shopify theme by hand

  1. Open the page source

On the store's homepage, right click and choose View Page Source.

  2. Search the source

Press Ctrl F, or Cmd F on a Mac, and type Shopify.theme.

  3. Read the line

schema_name is the original theme, name is the store's own label, and theme_store_id is its number in the Theme Store.

Shopify.theme = {"name":"Spring sale","schema_name":"Dawn",
  "schema_version":"15.2.0","theme_store_id":887,"role":"main"};

What the detector can and can't see

It can see

  • The theme's name and version
  • Whether the theme is linked to the Theme Store
  • Apps that load on the homepage
  • Accessibility overlays

It can't see

  • Which Shopify plan the store pays for
  • Apps that load only on other pages
  • Apps that run only in the admin
  • The store's sales or traffic

Apps the detector recognises

We match these by the addresses their scripts load from. It can miss an app, and an old script left in a theme can show an app the store no longer pays for.

How the detector works

A Shopify store that uses a theme tells the browser which one. We read the same public page anyone can open.

We open the homepage
One request, with a name that says who we are. Only the homepage, never a private page.
We read the theme details
Shopify puts the theme's name, version and Theme Store number in the page. A store can rename its copy, so we show the original name too.
We match the scripts
Apps load scripts from their own addresses. We compare those with a list of known apps and show the ones we recognise.

Theme detector questions, answered

How can I tell what Shopify theme a store uses?

Enter the store's address above. By hand, open the page source and search for Shopify.theme. It lists the theme's name, its version and its Theme Store number.

Why does it say not linked to the Theme Store?

A store with no Theme Store number is running a custom theme, one bought elsewhere, or its own customised copy of a Theme Store theme. Stores that manage their theme in GitHub often show this.

Why are some apps missing?

We read the homepage only, and many apps load only on product, cart or account pages. Apps that run in the Shopify admin leave no trace at all. So this list is what we can see, not everything the store uses.

Can it tell if a store is on Shopify Plus?

No. The homepage doesn't say which plan a store pays for, so we don't guess.

Why didn't it work on a store I know is on Shopify?

Some stores block automated visits, and some sit behind a password page. Stores that are headless have no theme on their homepage to read.
