Magento 2.4 end of support: the dates and your options

Every Magento 2.4 support date from Adobe, what end of support means for your store and PHP, and when an upgrade or a move to Shopify makes sense.

Magento 2.4.6 reached the end of regular support on August 11, 2026, and 2.4.7 follows on May 31, 2027. If your store runs either version, plan now to upgrade to 2.4.8 or 2.4.9, or to move to another platform such as Shopify.

Below are Adobe's dates for every 2.4 version, what end of support means in practice, and how to choose.

Key facts

  • Magento 2.4.6 lost regular support on August 11, 2026. Adobe Commerce extended support runs to August 31, 2027.
  • Magento 2.4.7 loses regular support on May 31, 2027. Extended support runs to May 31, 2028.
  • 2.4.8 is supported to May 31, 2028 and 2.4.9 to May 31, 2029. Adobe gives each version about three years.
  • PHP 8.2 reaches its own end of life on December 31, 2026. Adobe flags PCI risk for stores still on it.
  • On Adobe Commerce Cloud, Adobe stops maintaining environments on unsupported versions from June 1, 2027.

When does support end for each Magento 2.4 version?

These dates come from Adobe's list of released versions (opens in a new tab), updated October 14, 2026.

  • 2.4.4: Released April 12, 2022, Regular support ends April 12, 2025, Extended support ends April 14, 2026
  • 2.4.5: Released August 9, 2022, Regular support ends August 12, 2025, Extended support ends August 11, 2026
  • 2.4.6: Released March 14, 2023, Regular support ends August 11, 2026, Extended support ends August 31, 2027
  • 2.4.7: Released April 9, 2024, Regular support ends May 31, 2027, Extended support ends May 31, 2028
  • 2.4.8: Released April 8, 2025, Regular support ends May 31, 2028, Extended support ends none listed yet
  • 2.4.9: Released May 12, 2026, Regular support ends May 31, 2029, Extended support ends none listed yet

Adobe also lists a last round of security fixes after extended support for some versions: to May 31, 2027 for 2.4.4 and 2.4.5, and to May 31, 2028 for 2.4.6.

Adobe publishes these dates for Adobe Commerce, the paid edition. Its pages don't cover Magento Open Source. If you run Open Source, ask your developer which security patches your version still gets.

What does end of support mean for your store?

Your store doesn't switch off on the date. What stops is Adobe's work on that version. Adobe's lifecycle policy (opens in a new tab) says regular support includes:

  • quality fixes
  • security patches
  • hotfixes for critical security issues

Extended support keeps quality and security patches for the core coming for one more year. Adobe gives it to Adobe Commerce customers on 2.4.6 and 2.4.7 at no extra cost. After that, some older versions get one last security-only period with no quality fixes, and Adobe says it won't be extended.

Three things make the risk grow after your date:

  1. New security holes stay open. Every flaw found after your date is a flaw you fix yourself or live with.
  2. PHP runs out first. Adobe's policy notes PHP 8.1 reached end of life on December 31, 2025, and PHP 8.2 reaches it on December 31, 2026. Adobe says PCI is at risk on those versions and that each merchant must check with a qualified security assessor.
  3. Cloud stores can go offline. On Adobe Commerce Cloud, Adobe stops maintaining environments on unsupported versions from June 1, 2027, and says it may suspend their traffic.

Extensions add a fourth risk. When their makers drop support for your version, every upgrade later gets harder.

What are your options?

  • Upgrade to 2.4.8 or 2.4.9: What it means Stay on Magento with support to 2028 or 2029, Fits when Your business logic needs code inside the platform, and you have a Magento team
  • Take extended support, then decide: What it means Buys time to August 2027 (2.4.6) or May 2028 (2.4.7), Fits when You are on Adobe Commerce and a bigger decision is coming
  • Move to Shopify: What it means No more version upgrades to plan, Fits when Your catalog, checkout and integrations fit Shopify and its apps
  • Do nothing: What it means The store runs, the risk grows each month, Fits when Only while a plan is already moving

An upgrade is not a small job on most stores. The size depends on your extensions and custom code, so ask your developer for a fixed quote before you compare.

If you want the full cost picture of staying against leaving, our Magento vs Shopify comparison covers hosting, extensions, upgrades and B2B over time. Its short version: it comes down to whether your business logic needs code that runs inside the platform.

What does a move from Magento to Shopify cost?

Our data

These are our published prices for a Magento to Shopify migration, fixed before you sign:

  • Standard: Price $15,000, For Established Magento stores with a standard catalog and integrations
  • Pro: Price $25,000, For Complex integrations, large catalogs or custom functionality, with ERP and 3PL rebuilt and B2B features moved
  • Enterprise: Price from $35,000, For High volume Adobe Commerce stores, with multi-store setup and 90 days of support after launch

Most Magento moves take 6 to 10 weeks. You get the exact timeline in writing with your fixed price.

Then there is Shopify itself. Shopify Plus (opens in a new tab) costs $2,300 a month on a three-year term or $2,500 on a one-year term. Higher volume businesses may also pay a variable platform fee. Many stores that leave Magento don't need Plus at all, so price both.

How do you decide in time?

  1. Confirm your exact version. Your developer can tell you in a minute.
  2. Write down your date from the table above, and your PHP version.
  3. List your extensions and custom code. Mark the ones that run real business logic, such as pricing rules, B2B accounts or an ERP link.
  4. Get a fixed quote for the upgrade from your Magento team.
  5. Get a price for the move. Our calculator shows our published price for your store, and a traffic check puts it in writing.
  6. Compare three years of each. Include hosting, patches and the next upgrade, since 2.4.8 support also ends in 2028.
  7. Pick a switch window outside your busiest season, and count back 6 to 10 weeks of work plus time to decide.

For a store on 2.4.7, May 31, 2027 is the date to beat. A move that starts in early 2027 lands before it.

How we handle it

From our work

Two of our three written promises matter most on a Magento move: "Your old store stays live until switch day." and "If a redirect we set breaks in the first 90 days, we fix it free." Your Magento store keeps selling while the Shopify store is built. Every address with Google traffic gets its own redirect.

When we are not the right fit: if your pricing or B2B rules need code that runs inside the platform, upgrading Magento can be the better call. We will tell you so. We also work only with stores above $1M a year in online sales. Smaller stores can follow our free Shopify migration checklist.

On Magento and weighing a move? Ask for the free Google traffic check. Within 2 business days you get your top Google pages, where each one lands on Shopify, what breaks, and the fixed price in writing.

Frequently asked questions

Is Magento 2 end of life?

No. Magento 2 itself goes on. Each 2.4 version has its own end date. 2.4.6 lost regular support on August 11, 2026, and 2.4.7 loses it on May 31, 2027. The newest version, 2.4.9, is supported to May 31, 2029, according to Adobe's list of released versions.

Can I keep running Magento 2.4.6 after support ends?

Yes. The store keeps working. Adobe Commerce customers get extended support to August 31, 2027. After that Adobe sends no new quality fixes for 2.4.6. PHP 8.2, which many 2.4.6 stores run on, reaches its end of life on December 31, 2026, so plan your next step before then.

Does Magento Open Source get the same dates?

Adobe's lifecycle pages give dates for Adobe Commerce, the paid edition. They don't cover Magento Open Source. Ask your developer which security patches your Open Source version still receives, and plan as if your date were the same as the table above.

How long does a Magento to Shopify migration take?

Most Magento to Shopify migrations take 6 to 10 weeks. Large catalogs, ERP links and B2B rules sit at the longer end. With us you get the exact timeline in writing, with the fixed price, before you sign. Your Magento store stays live until switch day.

Should I upgrade to 2.4.7 or go straight to 2.4.8 or 2.4.9?

Go to the newest version you can. 2.4.7 loses regular support on May 31, 2027, so an upgrade to it buys only months. 2.4.8 is supported to May 31, 2028 and 2.4.9 to May 31, 2029, according to Adobe.
