What is a good conversion rate on Shopify in 2026?

Industry averages from 0.63% to 5.7%, how Shopify calculates conversion rate, the September 2026 session change, and where stores lose shoppers.

A good Shopify conversion rate is one that keeps rising against your own recent numbers for the same kind of traffic. As a rough guide, Shopify says ecommerce conversion rates tend to sit around 2% to 3% worldwide, and its guide lists June 2026 averages from 0.63% for luxury and jewelry to 5.7% for pet care. Shopify also changed how it counts sessions on September 21 to 23, 2026, so compare your rate only with numbers from after that change.

Below are the averages, how Shopify calculates the number, and where to look when yours is low.

What is the average Shopify conversion rate in 2026?

Shopify's guide to ecommerce conversion rates (opens in a new tab), updated on August 22, 2026, gives three reference points:

  • Statista reports that 1.4% of global ecommerce visits turned into purchases in Q1 2026.
  • Dynamic Yield, which benchmarks more than 400 brands, puts the global average at 2.66%.
  • Shopify's own summary is that average conversion rates tend to sit around 2% to 3%, and vary widely by industry, price point, device mix and traffic source.

The same guide lists these industry averages for June 2026:

  • Pet care and vet services: 5.7%
  • Beauty and personal care: 5.32%
  • Food and beverage: 4.58%
  • Fashion, accessories and apparel: 2.77%
  • Consumer goods: 1.76%
  • Home and furniture: 1.29%
  • Luxury and jewelry: 0.63%

The spread is the point. A pet care store and a luxury jewelry store can both be healthy with rates about nine times apart. Shopify notes that low-price, repeat-purchase categories convert higher, and high-value, considered purchases convert lower.

How does Shopify calculate conversion rate?

Shopify divides the online store sessions that completed checkout by all online store sessions. A session is one visit, and it ends after 30 minutes without activity.

Your Shopify reports (opens in a new tab) also split the path into steps, each with its own rate:

  • Added to cart rate: sessions with a cart addition, divided by all sessions.
  • Reached checkout rate: sessions that reached checkout, divided by all sessions.
  • Checkout conversion rate: sessions that completed checkout, divided by sessions that reached checkout.

These steps tell you more than the headline number. A low added to cart rate points at product pages, prices or traffic that doesn't match the offer. A low checkout conversion rate points at shipping costs, payment options or something broken in checkout.

Why did my Shopify conversion rate change in September 2026?

Shopify rolled out a new way of measuring sessions (opens in a new tab) between September 21 and 23, 2026. Your orders and sales didn't change. The number your rate is divided by did:

  • Sessions now follow continued activity, instead of ending at midnight UTC.
  • Some sessions without a pageview now count, such as a shopper who goes straight to checkout from a cart link.
  • Identified bot sessions are filtered out of session reports by default.

Fewer bot sessions can push your conversion rate up. Counting more sessions can push it down. Shopify says a higher or lower rate after the update isn't automatically good or bad, and suggests using the period after the update as your new baseline. Bot filtering only applies to sessions from October 7, 2025 onward, so older periods can't be filtered the same way.

In practice, don't compare October 2026 with October 2025 on conversion rate alone. Compare orders, sales and customers for those periods, and track conversion rate from late September 2026 forward.

What is a good conversion rate for my store?

Judge your rate against stores like yours first, then against your own trend. These factors move it most:

  • What you sell. Category and price change the rate more than design does.
  • Devices. Shopify's guide cites Contentsquare retail data with a 3.7% conversion rate on desktop and 2% on mobile. A store with mostly phone traffic should expect a lower blended rate.
  • Traffic sources. Returning customers and email subscribers convert very differently from cold social traffic. A new ad campaign can lower your rate while it raises your sales.
  • Average order value. Read conversion rate next to order value. A store that raises prices may convert fewer sessions and still earn more.

So "good" has two parts. Your rate sits in a sensible range for your category and device mix, and it moves up for the same traffic over time.

Where Shopify stores lose shoppers

Before you change anything, find the step where most sessions stop. Open the funnel metrics in Analytics, split them by device, then look at Sessions by landing page.

Common places stores lose people:

  • Product pages that hide the price, delivery time or returns below a long gallery.
  • Mobile menus and filters that are hard to use with one thumb.
  • Slow pages. Shopify says better web performance can improve your conversion rate, and the web performance reports (opens in a new tab) in your admin show which pages are slow for real visitors. Our guide to speeding up a Shopify store covers the usual fixes.
  • Costs that appear only at checkout. In the Baymard Institute research that Shopify's guide cites, extra costs such as shipping, tax and fees were the top reason US shoppers abandoned a checkout in 2025, at 39%.
  • Tracking that broke or counts twice. If your numbers jumped after an app change, check the tracking before you redesign anything. Our guide to Shopify checkout tracking shows how to test it.

How to raise your Shopify conversion rate

Work in this order, and change one thing at a time on pages with real traffic:

  • Fix what is broken first: errors, slow pages, tracking and mobile layout bugs.
  • Make the product page answer the buying questions near the top: price, what's included, delivery and returns.
  • Remove surprises from the cart and checkout, above all costs.
  • Test bigger changes with an A/B test once you have enough orders to read the result. With low traffic, test fewer and larger changes.

For PetsWorld we followed this path on a live store: a homepage that puts key categories and best sellers first, a clearer product page with stronger calls to action, then a simpler cart flow.

Quick answers

Is a 2% conversion rate good for a Shopify store?

It depends on your category. Against Shopify's June 2026 averages, 2% is below the pet care, beauty, food and beverage and fashion averages, and above home, consumer goods and luxury. Compare it with your own trend before you call it good or bad.

Why is my Shopify conversion rate so low?

Start with the funnel. Check whether shoppers stop at add to cart, at checkout or inside checkout, and whether the drop is on mobile, on one traffic source or on one landing page. Then check speed and tracking before you change the design.

Where do I see my conversion rate in Shopify?

On the Analytics page of your Shopify admin. The reports there break it down by step, by device and by landing page.
