Square vs Shopify: which is better for your store?
Square is built around in-person payments, and its online store comes with them: a free plan, then Plus at $49 and Premium at $149 a month per location, with online card fees from 2.9% + 30¢. Shopify is built around the online store and adds point of sale on every plan, with POS Pro at $89 a month per location. If most of your sales happen at the counter, Square is simpler, and if most happen online, Shopify fits better.

Stay on Square, or switch?
Plenty of stores should stay on Square. Here is when it is the right call, and when Shopify fits better.
Stay on Square if
- Most of your sales happen in person, and the online store is a side channel
- You run a café, restaurant or service business on Square's point of sale, bookings or payroll
- Square Free already covers what your website needs
- Your team knows Square's hardware, and switching would slow the counter down
Shopify is the better fit if
- Online is your main channel, and you want themes, apps and a checkout built for it
- You ship across the country or abroad, and want Shopify Markets for currencies, languages and duties
- You sell wholesale and want B2B catalogs on the same store
- You want apps for subscriptions, reviews, loyalty and email from thousands in the Shopify App Store
- You still sell in person and want point of sale on the same platform
